Comments by Dr. Benjamin F. Cooling III on the role of slavery in the Civil War

“On the other hand, slavery isn't the issue - is it?  Rather it is a sequence from (a) freed people to (b) Reconstruction context (c) New South/Separate but Equal/Lost Cause (d) civil rights and thence int he loop back to remembrance and respect for sacred ground - called cemeteries (sacred to individuals and families not necessarily institutions like church and state).  This is the area to now focus upon in the sesquicentennial sense and there will be some good work to be done there and some has already been done”.
