Bright Lights Alexandria Gazette Packet February 2011

Bright Lights: At the City Council Meeting on Tuesday night elected officials voted to approve a $9,000 appropriation to keep the tree light display along King Street up through March instead of taking it down at the beginning of February.

"I like to call them business-development lights," said Councilwoman Del Pepper. "There’s nothing frivolous about them."

The City of Alexandria has a significant budget deficit and this type of public gesture can only be considered a nice-to-do-if-we-have-extra-money priority. We proclaim ourselves to be an Eco-City. This practice shoots holes in our contention that we are sustainable in all of our actions. Moreover, since much of the Eco-City effort is to demonstrate leadership to get people to change their wasteful ways it hardly makes sense for City leaders to be a bad example.

Leaving the lights on when they don't need to be on wastes money and energy, neither of which we can afford to squander.
