Fort Ward’s National Designation
Sunday August 26, 2012 marks the 30th anniversary of Fort Ward’s designation to the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of Interior.
The nomination for National Register designation was prepared by the Curator of the Fort Ward Museum and submitted by the Alexandria City Manager for approval by the Mayor and City Council in June 1981. The proposal was then submitted to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s State Historic Preservation Officer at the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission for certification and forwarding to the U.S. Department of Interior. After certification by the Landmarks Commission in February 1982 the nomination was included in the National Register by the Keeper on August 26, 1982.
Fort Ward was recognized for Civil War earthen fortifications, reproduction of three military buildings, and the entire 35 acre park surrounding the fortified works and reproduction buildings. It is one of more than forty places in Alexandria, Virginia that have been nationally recognized as examples of buildings or sites with historical, cultural or archaeological significance.
