Society Urges City to Protect the Craven Home and Warming Hut at Fort Ward Park

The Fort Ward and Seminary African American Descendant Society, Inc. appointee to the Fort Ward Park Management Plan Implementation Committee has urged CIty of Alexandria Department heads and their staff to take actions to protect two fragile areas within Fort Ward Park. The remnants of the Craven home and the park's first greenhouse, known as the "warming hut", have been adversely impacted by park maintenance vehicle traffic. The Craven site is on the backside of the fort. The warming hut is behind the restroom/ park managers building.

Society representative J. Glenn Eugster verbally and in writing requested that these two sites be protected with some sort of emergency stabilization. Each area has the potential to be featured in the upcoming interpretative plan which J. Lance Mallamo of the Office of HIstoric Alexandria is developing.

The advisory committee meets Thursday evening to discuss this and other items of interest to the park.
