Help Please! City Council To Decide the Amount of Community Input at Fort Ward Park
On Tuesday night June 27, 2011 the Mayor and City Council will determine how much community input is appropriate for future decision-making and management of Fort Ward Park.
Community interests have asked the Mayor, Deputy Mayor,Council members, the City and Deputy City Manager, and Recreation Department staff to add a representative from the Seminary Hill Association and the Seminary Civic Association to the proposed Fort Ward Park Advisory Group. City managers and the Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission, who drafted the original proposal, prefer more "at large" discretionary representation from around the City. In 2008 the Recreation Department and Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission leaders prepared and approved a plan, without input from the public or the Office of Historic Alexandria, for Fort Ward Park that would significantly increase park use. Many of the proposed buildings and parking areas to be added would be located on top of historic Native American, Civil War, and African American sites--including family grave areas.
Community interests have been working with City managers and elected officials for over four years to improve the decision-making and management of the historical park so that park and recreational services and activities are compatible with historic, cultural, environmental and community values. Community representation on the proposed Advisory Group, which will help the City leaders develop a management plan for the park, is essential to solving long-standing problems.
Please take a moment and call or write to the Mayor and City Council requesting them to add a representative from the Seminary Hill Association and the Seminary Civic Association to the proposed Fort Ward Park Advisory Group. City-wide ideas about Fort Ward need to be balanced with community input, insights and experience. Urge Council to insure that the Recreation Department works with our community!
